What is YOUR 2013 going be like?

E-mail Print PDF

How big a year is 2013 going to be for you, musically?
Do you have a plan for success?
Are you relying on luck as your plan?

If there is one thing I've learned about musicians is that they seldom like to plan their careers. The tendency
is to try this, try that and rely on incremental gains and the hope of "something big" happening. Very, very few
approach their success with systematic and proven planning techniques. Every year comes and goes and they
say, "This is going to be MY year." Why? Because, they are waiting on external factors to favor them is such a
way as they're efforts seem justified.

If you want to make more money, have greater success and be happier with your musical efforts..... get a plan
and stick with it. The magic of a plan is that it takes the mystery out of things. You will know what your goals
and objectives are and you will know the things YOU have to do to achieve those goals. Most people aren't really
sure how to achieve their goals. The answer is always "play more shows". Although, performance is a vital
component in an overall strategy, performing too much in the same area is counter-productive to larger
success. You must understand specifically how and why those performances fit in your larger strategy.

What do I know about it?

Well prior to starting SSR, I helped business leaders in a billion dollar corporation create their strategies and
plans. I worked with Business Analysts and Project Managers to realize multi-million dollar projects. I've led
strategic planning sessions, created and executed large scale projects with great success. I taught Decision
Making and Critical Thinking to business managers and executives. I've taken the knowledge I've gained
in the corporate world and made available to musical artists and other music business-minded professionals.

The reluctant Musician -

I know, I know... most musicians and creative types read this and go... "blah, blah, blah, etc." I would ask
you this... How serious ARE you? Did you double or triple your results this last year over one prior to that? If
you did, do you know what contributed to that result? Do you know how to capitalize on those results moving
forward. You know your music. I know the music business. If you knew for certain you could double or triple
your results this year, would it be worth spending a few hundred dollars to gain that success? Fear of failure
often pales in comparison to fear of success. If you are ready to truly have YOUR best year, face your fears
of operating with a plan and call or email today.

How it works -

I give away many of the secrets associated with this process. Why? Because the magic is the facilitator not
the process. I help make the process work. Think of this whole thing are having a music career personal
trainer. Having SSR in your corner can make a significant difference.

It is challenging. It is difficult, but anything worth doing is not necessarily easy. Growth requires you getting
out of your comfort some. My process for building a plan for musicians varies based on my relationship with
them, i.e. if they are signed or affiliates my knowledge of them and my involvement with them is greater.
The process for the general public is more rigorous due to the lack of familiarity. The general process is:

1) Measure and understand prior year (habits and results) Strategic Planning Workshop

2) Conduct S.W.O.T. Analysis (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities & Threats)

3) Set Goals/Objectives and Milestones for the next 12 months

4) Build the plan and agreements

5) Setup periodic coaching and consulting sessions to keep you on track.

Your best investment in yourself -

If you had a personal trainer at a gym you would expect to pay about $40/hr or about $2100 annually if
you used them once a week. Your music career personal trainer will cost a fraction of that. Music Business
Planning Services start at only $200.00. Set up an appointment today.

Top 10 Things To Include In Your 2013 Plan

E-mail Print PDF

No doubt you are thinking about what you want to accomplish in 2013. Here are my Top Ten Things you should examine
when building your plan for the year.

  1. Measure 2012 - Everyone had aspirations of what they wanted to accomplish in 2010. My suggestion is that you
look at 2012 through the lens of these 5 dimensions: Financial Success (income and expenses); Growth in Skill
(how well did you hone your craft); Content Production (how much sell-able content did you finish?); Performance
    Goals
(did you increase frequency and quality of your gigs?); and Market Effectiveness (How many fans did you
collect and how well did you market yourself to them?). When you take time to examine these dimensions of 2012, you
can gain insight into what things you should: do more of in 2013, do less of in 2013, or maintain doing as you did for this
    year.
  2. Set Good Goals for 2013 -- Ensure you are setting goals in those categories that are: achievable; realistic, but still
a stretch (Good goals create some discomfort); measurable; and tie directly to your long-term objectives.
  3. Know Your Critical Relationships -- Since no one person can effectively do it all by themselves, you need to ensure you
have the alliances and resources necessary to achieve your goals. Take time to think through what relationships are
needed for success and ensure that your plan includes finding, building and maintaining any relationships critical to your
    goals for 2013.
  4. Break It Down Into Quarters -- Top Businesses plan and measure their success every three months. So should you.
It is best to break your goals into quarterly milestones and organize your action items by quarter.
  5. Pad Everything -- You know it only takes you an hour or so to record those guitar parts. Heck you've been playing them
live for five months now. Let's say you are estimating how long a recording project will take. My advice is that you add 15-20%
more time to everything to account for all the things you can't account for. Inevitably, something will not go like it should and
padding your time will help you stay on target. You'll be glad you did.
  6. Good Habits = Good Results -- We all know what are good habits to have that will make us better musicians and more
commercially successful. The tricks is sustaining good habits. Make sure your plan for 2013 is filled with building and
    maintaining good habits.
  7. Measure 2 Weeks For Insight -- As you get out of the gate for 2013, get paper and a pen and track where you spend your
time everyday for two weeks. You'll be amazed at what insight you'll obtain on where your time is going. You can use this as a
tool to ensure your goals are obtainable based on your current habits. It also presents you with some opportunities to refine
your activities to ensure you have good habits early.
  8. Strengthen Your Brand -- Your brand is how the world will identify you in a sea of other talent. Ensure 2013's plan includes
tasks and goals to strengthen your brand.
  9. Plan Communication -- Are you telling people what you desire them to do? Are you helping people help you? You have to
communicate with resources and fans in a frequent and informative manner. Be sure your overall plan includes how you will
communicate to the rest of the world.
  10. Make Technology Work For You -- It is easy to be overwhelmed with blogs, status updates, email distribution, calendaring,
tweets, song uploads, video uploads, and site maintenance. I highly recommend that you take the time to figure out what
online sites, online tools and mobile tools help you obtain your goals and objectives and which are luxuries. Make sure your
overall plan includes time and actions to organize your technology tools. Minimize the time you spend on things that do not
contribute directly to this year's goals.
